Summer camp exists to help make our Troops stronger. In keeping with this, the goal of our SPL program is to develop and empower the SPLs of any given week at Camp Meriwether to take ownership of their Troop, it’s program, and it’s success.

To make this happen, during their daily SPL Meetings they’ll learn about the Aims and Methods of Scouting, the fundamentals of group leadership, and teamwork strategies in an accessible, relatable way. The cornerstone of these meetings is an extended SPL Dinner on Monday night, where the SPLs as a group will have the chance to have a special dinner (and dessert) separate from their Troops to learn, work together, and have fun. The SPL program will also serve to coordinate Troop’s participation in camp chores.

The SPL Project:

To cap it all off, the SPLs will participate in a simple SPL Project. The intent isn’t to add work, but to work together to creatively serve the needs of their Troop(s) while at camp.

What they do will be determined by the individual SPL or group of SPLs, and feature something with your Troop or multiple Troops that either serves one of Scouting’s Aims or implements one of Scouting’s Methods. This could be of organizing a portion of camp’s program, like Intertroop Capture the Flag or Scavenger Hunt, soliciting ideas for the Troop’s Annual Program Planning Conference or recruiting, or anything else they come up with.

Having their SPL seriously attempt the completion of a project will be a requirement of the Honor Troop award.
