Merit Badges
- Archery ($5 fee)
- Rifle Shooting ($20 fee)
- Shotgun Shooting ($25 fee)
All Shooting Sports merit badges require qualifying to complete, which may require free time to finish and can be difficult and time-consuming, especially for younger scouts. There is no age requirement for the Shotgun Merit Badge, though younger scouts may find it difficult to hold the firearm. There is no permission or release form to participate, either. These are only required by some states, such as California, and Oregon does not.
Activities
- Open Shoot: During afternoon program, Scouts and adult leaders have the opportunity to practice their marksmanship at the rifle, shotgun, black powder, and archery ranges. Open shoot requires tickets, which are sold in the Trading Post or at the Ranges. Rifle tickets cost $1/15 shots, and Shotgun and Black Powder tickets cost $0.50/1 shot. Tickets are good all week long, but tickets are not refundable. If there are a lot of people wanting to shoot one afternoon, you might not get a chance to use all your tickets on the day you buy them, so we recommend buying tickets in daily quantities to avoid having tickets left over at the end of the week.
- Dime Club and Double Dime Club: Prove your mettle as a sharpshooter by shooting five rounds within the size of a dime on the rifle range to join the Dime Club. Do it with ten rounds to join the Double Dime Club!
- National Marksman Qualification Program: The NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program is a self-paced training program that rewards participants for developing and improving marksmanship skills. Those who complete a certain number of targets with a certain score will receive special recognition. Participants will have a brief meeting at the start of the week that explains how the program works.
Safety
Our Shooting Sports program has no age requirement – the only requirement is that the scout can safely handle the firearm. Safety involves both mental attitude and physical ability. If a scout cannot safely handle a firearm they will be redirected to a different program.
Just for Adult Leaders
- Scoutmaster Shoot-Off: This evening program activity opens all three ranges (Archery, Rifle, & Shotgun) for various shooting games and competitions. Free for all adult leaders.
